Journey
Jr La Melo, born Bamba Lanciné Hassan Philo Junior in 2005, is a Côte d’Ivoire born hip hop artist who performs primarily in French while incorporating street slang from Abidjan. Emerging in the early 2020s, he quickly became one of the young voices gaining strong traction within modern Ivorian rap. His music reflects youth culture, celebration, ambition, and street confidence, combining traditional rap structure with dance-influenced production drawn from local club culture.
Raised in Abidjan, Jr La Melo grew up surrounded by the energy of Coupé Décalé and African club music, influences that later shaped his creative identity. By his teenage years, he was already experimenting with music and developing what he later described as the maïmouna movement, a youthful party-driven style merging Ivorian dance traditions with French rap influence. The movement gained attention among younger audiences and helped distinguish his artistic brand.
His mainstream rise began around 2022 when he featured on the hit track “En Haut” alongside Didi B and Tamsir. The song gained massive attention across Côte d’Ivoire and introduced him to a broader audience. Following that exposure, he continued building momentum through solo releases and collaborations with artists across the francophone music space.
In 2024, Jr La Melo signed under Coordination Consulting in partnership with Sony Music Africa, marking a major step in his professional career. The same year, he released his debut album EEG (Équipe de G.O.A.T), a project that strengthened his growing reputation and expanded his reach across African and European markets. He followed this with several singles and the 2026 EP Air de Jeu, further establishing his presence among new generation rap artists.
His catalogue includes popular releases such as “Mademoiselle” featuring Safarel Obiang, “Bobi,” “Ketebo,” “Tchebango,” “Moto,” “Mango,” “NPN” featuring Chily and 3XDAV’s, and “Un Peu De Jack.” His projects often combine hip hop production with rhythmic elements inspired by Ivorian dance culture, creating a style that resonates strongly in clubs and youth spaces.
Jr La Melo has also built his profile through frequent collaborations with artists including Safarel Obiang, Chily, Paulo Chakal, Ism7k, Gambino La MG, Leto, Widgunz, and others. These collaborations have positioned him within a network of francophone hip hop and Afro urban artists shaping contemporary African youth music.
On stage, he has performed across major venues and festivals within Abidjan, including appearances at the Palais de la Culture and other high profile entertainment events. His energetic stage presence and strong youth following have helped maintain his growing visibility in live performance circuits.
Although still early in his career, Jr La Melo is widely recognized as part of a new generation pushing Ivorian rap into broader international conversations. His role within the maïmouna movement reflects how younger artists are reshaping African rap by merging local street culture with global hip hop influence. Through consistent releases and strategic collaborations, he continues expanding his reach while representing the evolving voice of Ivorian urban music.
